Multi-percussionist and more

 

Lucy Landymore is an award-winning multi-percussionist, drummer and composer, especially known for her versatility.

Solo

As a soloist, Lucy has performed her own works across the world, including at Alondra de la Parra’s prestigious Festival PAAX in Mexico in 2022 and 2023. Her composition Roo for solo vibraphone, violin and orchestra has also been toured in venues across Europe with Lucy as a vibraphone soloist. Other venues where Lucy has performed as a soloist include the Zurich Tonhalle, Gulbenkian Lisbon, Victoria Hall Geneva, Wiener Konzerthaus, Radiokulturhaus Wien, St. John’s Smith Square London, to name a few. As well as performing her own works, Lucy also plays the Sejourné Marimba Concerto, most recently with the Vienna Classical Players in 2022.

Composition

Lucy has been commissioned to compose orchestral works, for example Fantaisie Festive for Orchestra and 17 soloists by the Puplinge Classique festival, solo works (for example Home), and ensemble works, which include Fußball im Konzert comissioned by More than Classic, at the Tonhalle Zurich. She also wrote the opera Der Zauberer von Oz which premiered in June 2023. It’s next performance will be held at the Volksoper, Rostock in January 2024. Her music is published with Universal Edition.

Collaborations

Her remarkable talent and versatility has lead Lucy to collaborate with a range of artists, from Stewart Copeland, Christina Stürmer, Mura Masa or Andrea Bocelli, to frequent appearances with world-renowned duo Igudesman & Joo. The duo are currently touring Rachmaninoff Will Survive with different orchestras, where Lucy is a featured soloist with a specially developed Rachmaninoff percussion rack called the Rach-rack. As well as being toured with orchestras such as Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, Tonkünstler orchestra Wien, or NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover in September 2023, this concerto was performed with the Czech Philharmonic and broadcast on Czech TV, WDR and ORF in March 2023.

Hans Zimmer

As the drum kit soloist with the World of Hans Zimmer, Lucy frequently performs to sold-out arenas. She previously toured with Hans Zimmer Live, which can be seen on the DVD Live in Prague. Most recently she toured Taiwan in 2023. Together with Igudesman & Joo, Hans Zimmer invited Lucy to perform at the release of his new documentary Hollywood Rebel, by performing special arrangements of his film scores at the BBC Studios, Cannes in 2022.

Mambo Jambo

Mambo Jambo is a quartet comprising of Aleksey Igudesman, Hyung-ki Joo, Yu Horiuchi and Lucy Landymore, highlighting the diverse abilities of all their musical royalties and bringing music from different genres into action. In this show, Lucy’s versatility is put into the spotlight as she switches between healing vibraphone pieces to congas, to Venezuelan maracas and virtuosic drum kit solos. They have performed at venues such as Tonhalle Düsseldorf or Theater an der Wien.

Masterclasses

With the knowledge Lucy has accumulated through years of world-wide performances and her experience studying in Cuba and Rio de Janeiro, she has given masterclasses on Film Music Drumming and Composing for Vibraphone as far across the globe as the Singapore Yong Sew Too Conservatory of Music.

Lucy has been featured as a performer and composer on numerous TV and Radio stations showcasing her unique work, including Sky TV with Michael Parkinson, Deutsche Welle, BBC 2, BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 3 among many others. Many international publications have featured Lucy’s work, including the German Drums & Percussion magazine and the French Batterie magazine, where Lucy was listed as one of the Top 10 New Drummers of 2019.

Early years

Lucy's fascination with drums was obvious from the age of 2, when she began watching performances by her father's big band, “78RPM”. At the age of 17, Lucy won the percussion category of the 2010 BBC Young Musician of the Year where she performed Frank Zappa’s The Black Page. She then went on to study percussion at the Royal College of Music under Dave Hockings and Ralph Salmins.
